Easter in Norway

Celebrate springtime in the fjords

Want to experience a truly authentic Norwegian Easter? Here’s your guide to our cherished – and very specific – traditions.

Easter in Norway revolves around a handful of traditions that locals consider absolutely essential. At its heart is "Friluftsliv" – our cherished outdoor living philosophy – which dominates the holiday. You'll find half the country retreating to their cabins, filling their days with outdoor activities such as kids ski races, hikes and bonfires.

Outdoor traditions

To experience Easter like a true Norwegian, there are a few essential traditions. Enjoying a freshly peeled orange – or even an orange soda – on a ski trip or hike is a must. This is best accompanied by a Kvikk Lunsj, the iconic hiking chocolate, with bonus points for bringing hot chocolate in a well-loved thermos.

Gathering around a bonfire on a snow-carved bench, using your skis as a seat, is a cherished part of the experience. And no Norwegian Easter is complete without seeking out the sun’s first warming rays against the most sheltered cabin wall – an annual ritual that has the whole nation checking the weather forecast weeks in advance.

Embracing "hygge"

Indoors, you haven't experienced Norwegian Easter without embracing "Hygge." This means lighting fires, playing board games, and most importantly, settling into a comfortable chair with an Easter crime novel – reading mysteries during Easter is as fundamental as the holiday itself. Your meals should be unhurried affairs, especially breakfasts, which stretch out leisurely. Easter eggs are filled with sweets, and the Easter evening isn't complete without slow-roasted lamb as the centerpiece of a proper celebratory dinner.
